Help the Cle Elum Seven!

You can donate to a life-saving project for the chimpanzees!

With your help, we can have a veterinary clinic up and running at the sanctuary by this Fall! Read below for the full description and need for this important project and thank you for making a donation!

The clinic is a crucial project for the care of the chimpanzees and represents an immediate need for the Cle Elum Seven. We have an aging population of chimpanzees who will have more need for veterinary care in the coming years. No matter their age, there is no predicting what injuries or illnesses may present themselves. In the span of a few months in 2012, we diagnosed Burrito's congestive heart failure and Jody lost a toe on her left foot during a fight. Luckily, we were able to treat both of these situations without the use of anesthesia. In other circumstances we may have needed to transport one or both of them to either a local facility without all the necessary equipment or to a facility at quite a distance.

An on-site clinic will allow us to provide immediate veterinary care for the Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees for both preventative and emergency needs. It will reduce the amount of time they spend under anesthesia, improving both their safety and well-being. And the clinic will be designed and outfitted specifically for chimpanzees, making it easier and safer for the veterinarians to do their lifesaving work. After some evaluation of our immediate needs for a clinic and a survey of other sanctuaries, we have decided to outfit a mobile unit. This will not only allow us to have a veterinary space on-site in a short amount of time, but will also provide some flexibility if we need to transport an ill or injured chimpanzee elsewhere for further care. It could even allow us to provide clinic space for other chimpanzees in need.

Thanks to the fund-a-need at the 2011 auction plus donations and pledges from major donors (big thanks to Karen and Don Young!), we have the large rv/trailer, which will serve as the clinic in addition to many miscellaneous costs.

The fund-a-need at Out of the Box 2013 - both the gala event and here online - will cover the costs of crucial veterinary equipment, a shelter over the clinic, and the hook-ups needed to make the clinic operational year round. The cost of these items is $35,000 total. Any additional funds raised will be added to a Veterinary Care Fund for the chimpanzees.
